The District Archives in Akureyri (Héraðsskjalasafnið á Akureyri) is located on the 3rd floor of Brekkugata 17.  We are here.

The archives objective is the collection and preservation of documents and other recorded sources from the district’s history to be used by administration, organisations and individuals alike. This is done to safeguard their interest and rights and to aid scientific and academic research. The archives jurisdiction spans all districts in Eyjafjörður except the district of Dalvíkurbyggð and Fjallabyggð. A picture of the jurisdiction can be seen below.
The archives contain mainly documents from the municipality and institutions of Akureyri and documents from other municipalities in the district.

Furthermore, we have documents from various associations, it is their legal responsibility to deliver their archives if they have received money from the municipalities or from the Icelandic state. We do not have any legal claims on private documents, i.e. letter-collections, diaries, manuscripts of literature and so on, but collect as much of such documents as possible for their historical value.

Genealogy is an ever-popular hobby or study in Iceland, and we have church records from the whole country on microfilms.
It is possible to look through lists of our records that have been archived here on our website.
You can look at photos, mainly from exhibitions we have done, here.

If you have records that you want to preserve with us, please feel free to contact us.
